Copyrights and Wrongs: Addressing the Issues with Today’s Intellectual Property Legislation

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) aims to protect and uphold international standards related to intellectual property rights and intersectional innovations in all fields ranging from technology to medicine. Delegates in this committee will explore key challenges in the context of balancing the protection of intellectual property rights with increasing the accessibility of crucial knowledge and resources. Furthermore, the committee will address the topic of regulating the intersection between generative AI and intellectual property violations alongside the issue of generalized patent abuse involving the concept of patient thickets. WIPO aims to foster collaboration among member states to establish efficient international policies that address such issues and promote innovation and competition while safeguarding intellectual property rights. Emphasizing the role patents possess in affecting the accessibility of technology, medicine, and infrastructure, WIPO delegates will delve into measures of regulation and international frameworks that enable the international community to manage intellectual property legislation with a cohesive approach employing capacity building, dispute resolution, and the creation/commercialization of intellectual property.
