The French Revolution
Do You Hear the People Sing: The French Revolution, 1789
Taking place just after King Louis XVI was guillotined (January, 1793), this committee will initially delve into the political competition between the radical Jacobins and the moderate Girondins over control of the National Convention as well as strive to confront the societal challenges during the Reign of Terror such as the Haitian Revolution, food shortages, and censorship. With crisis updates including chronological events such as Marie Antoinette's death and Robespierre's death, the committee will enter the Thermidorian Reaction and navigate more political reorganization until finally culminating with the Napoleonic Wars, where delegates will be forced to reconcile with international repercussions.
Chair - Emma Cummis
Emma Cummis is a first year at UVA. Emma is from Fairfax, Virginia. She intends on majoring in Foreign Affairs with minors in Economics and Women, Gender, and Sexuality. Emma competed with Robinson Secondary School in high school. Currently, she is on the UVA Model UN Travel Team. Emma is a huge history nerd, so she can’t wait to see what shenanigans you guys get up to! Most importantly she wants you all to have fun and play with historical accuracy like a Quentin Tarantino movie (not too far off actual events, but still fantastical).
Crisis director - Marie Chuparkoff
Marie Chuparkoff is a first year at UVA, originally from Cleveland, Ohio. Marie intends to double major in Foreign Affairs and Music with a minor in French. Currently, Marie competes on the UVA Model UN Travel Team, and this is her first year ever doing MUN! Besides MUN, Marie is involved in orchestra and theater at UVA, and her favorite musical is, of course, Les Miserables (although that was unfortunately about a different revolution). She is excited to see some crazy, whimsical ideas alter the course of the French Revolution we all know and love.
